Our Story
Certified trainer, movement specialist, and founder of Get Better with Niia — a boutique fitness community rooted in the belief that every body can get better.
Meet Your Trainer
Niia Bishop began her movement journey at age 5 as a dancer. She earned a scholarship to the Alvin Ailey School of Dance, where she trained in ballet, modern, African, and jazz — until a knee injury at 16 altered her path. She continued dancing and studying movement while earning her BA at Amherst College (taking courses at Mt. Holyoke and Smith Colleges as well), and later attended the University of Michigan to pursue a PhD in Comparative Literature.
It was in Michigan that she discovered Pilates — starting with Windsor Pilates at home and finding the results so profound that she pursued formal certification. She earned her mat and machine Pilates credentials in 2007. She also received a scholarship through the National Dance Institute to certify as a dance instructor. In 2009, she created Mamilates — a mother-and-baby Pilates class blending movement and bonding — which she taught in New York City, Long Island, and Buffalo.
Niia went on to teach at Club Pilates before deepening her expertise in the Gyrotonic® Method, one of the most effective and least available movement systems in the country. She brings over a decade of Pilates experience, a lifetime of movement knowledge, and an academic's precision to every client she works with.
What sets Niia apart isn't a single method — it's the way she sees a body. She reads patterns, compensations, and history. She understands that a teen athlete and a post-operative senior may need very different things, but both deserve the same quality of attention and care. This studio exists because she couldn't find anywhere else that felt like this.
The Approach
Every program at Get Better with Niia is informed by two foundational disciplines — chosen because they work for every body, at every stage.
Foundation One
Pilates is the art of controlled movement — building deep core strength, improving posture, and creating the muscular balance that protects joints and prevents injury. Niia uses Pilates principles as a baseline for all training, whether you're on a reformer or on the floor. It's precise, progressive, and endlessly adaptable.
Foundation Two
Gyrotonic® is a movement system that works the body in circular, spiraling patterns — the way the body actually wants to move. It improves flexibility, coordination, and joint health through fluid, three-dimensional movement. Especially powerful for clients with chronic pain, stiffness, or post-surgical limitations.
Always Included
Beyond any single method, every session integrates mobility work and functional strength — training patterns that translate into everyday life. Whether that's carrying groceries, playing with your kids, competing in a sport, or walking without pain, the goal is always movement that matters.
Coming Soon
Get Better with Niia is expanding into the full wellness picture — integrating meditation, nutrition coaching, and life coaching into the community. Because getting better isn't just physical. It's mental, emotional, and relational too.
The Space
Get Better with Niia is a private boutique fitness studio at 5113 Farrow Rd, Columbia, SC. The setting is intentional: stepping away from the noise of everyday life, into a space that is calm, grounded, and focused entirely on you.
